Underwater Wrecks Museum
On the road out of Port en Bessin, the underwater wrecks museum is exactly that. An underwater salvage firm given the contract to clear the Normandy coastline of wrecks which were ruining so many fishing nets, and creating obstructions to navigation off the coast. The result has been that a number of their finds have been stabilised since bringing out of the salt water, and put on display. You can photograph external exhibits, but sadly photos inside are prohibited. Still, here is an M5A1, a couple of Sherman DDs, a Sherman with Dozer and other guns and (large) bits of ships. A US Priest tells a tale, which was found with other vehicles, still in place in a sunken LCT. This one was kept, and when they got it on dry land, found a watertight package of the drivers personal effects still under the seat. In the late 1990s they traced him, brought him to see his old vehicle, and returned his documents to him, over 50 years after they went to the bottom of the sea. A quite fascinating set of exhibits to see.
There is just no substitute for visiting the real battlefields of WW2 in Europe if you have an opportunity to do so.
