Mimoyecques - the V3
Another of the German WW2 sites that never got into action. Sealed off at the endof the war, today it has been opened up as a museum. Only the upper galleries, and some of these are still sealed as well, are open to walk through. As you walk in you are faced by a tunnel disappearing ahead of you for some 2/3rds of a mile! It was set to house the 25-barrelled 'super-gun' that could have shelled London. Again, Allied bombing caused so much damage it was abandoned. I think you will be staggered by the sheer size of these unerground tunnels. Facilities are limited to a small cafe, in a rather ramshackle portacabin but plenty of parking and you are made very welcome.
There is just no substitute for visiting the real battlefields of WW2 in Europe if you have an opportunity to do so.
