MAFVA Nationals
MAFVA, the Model Armoured Fighting Vehicle Association has been going for something like 40 years, and one of the highlights in their calendar is always the Nationals. These are held around the country, dependant on one of the local branches playing host. Most times in recent years they have been hosted by the Cambridge Branch in conjunction with the Military Vehicle Day at the IWM site at Duxford, in Cambridgeshire. There is separate coverage of Duxford, so this is just some models from the show. I am always pleased because the smaller scales are always well represented and the standard of modelling is always high. Having said that, there are a good number of classes which tend to be undersubscribed, so there is still a chance for anyone to be among the winners, if you don't go for the most popular classes.
In recent years I have been impressed by the standards among the junior entrants, which is good. These have even included the 3rd place of a 4 year old in 2007 with an orange Cromwell that he had built based on a photo of a range target. Seeing his face on winning (and all juniors get a prize) was worth every second.
There is just no substitute for visiting the real battlefields of WW2 in Europe if you have an opportunity to do so.
