Longues sur Mere
Longues sur Mere was a naval coastal battery, right on the Normandy coastline. Today the bunkers are still pretty much intact, and 3 of the 4 gun casemates still contain the naval guns they were equipped with. The fourth one is still there too, but in pieces in the ground in front of the bunker, where it was destroyed at the time. Walk along the road in front, and you see 2 or 3 Tobruk pits and a storage bunker, before coming to the large command and observation bunker at the cliff edge. Kept today as a historic site, this is a fascinating place to visit. What's long gone are the mines, the wire and the trenches for defence. One tip, to go in the observation bunker, take a torch, as the interior is unlit.
There is just no substitute for visiting the real battlefields of WW2 in Europe if you have an opportunity to do so.
