Eperleques

Eperlecques - the V2

It never went into action, but had it done so it could have caused mayhem in southern England. On the edge of the firest, not far north of St Omer, lies the Bunker of Eperlecques. This huge bunker was intended to be a launch point for the V2 Rockets. The Allies bombed it heavily, including the use of the 22,000lb Tallboy bomb. The photo shows how it managed to "chip" the roof. You need to stand beside it to appreciate the vast size.

There is just no substitute for visiting the real battlefields of WW2 in Europe if you have an opportunity to do so.
